There’s actually an element of strategy involved, rather than just rampant button mashing. It makes the flow of combat rather different, with you having to whittle down their armour while avoiding their attacks, then go in for the kill while they’re vulnerable.

And after a while the armour bars top up again. They have armour bars, and only by depleting them can you make them vulnerable to damage. Perhaps the biggest change though, is that notable enemies – leaders, bosses and suchlike – aren’t just meatbags for you to wail upon until they go down. Combat in One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 might just be the deepest of any warriors game yet. And there are other differences too, like being able to dash and launch your opponents up into the air for epic aerial combos. You can equip up to four of them, and they are accessible like special moves in other anime-based games from Bandai Namco – by holding the right shoulder button and pressing a face button. Out are Musou attacks, replaced with special abilities that you obtain as you play. “It’s easy to fall in love with its ridiculously over-the-top band of characters”
